history

A train bridge that curves straight into a mountain

Switzerland’s Landwasser Viaduct carries trains across a deep valley on tall stone arches. The bridge curves directly into a tunnel in the cliff, so the railway bends across open air before disappearing into rock. Its shape follows the route through the mountains rather than taking a straight line across the valley.

history

A castle shaped by its tiny island

Chillon Castle stands on a rocky island in Lake Geneva, Switzerland. Its buildings follow the island’s oval shape instead of a regular square plan. The towers and courtyards fit the available rock: the ground beneath the castle helped decide what the castle would look like.

nature

Hooves built for tiny footholds

Alpine ibex are wild goats of the Alps, including Switzerland’s mountains. Their hooves have hard edges around softer inner pads, and their two toes can move independently. That combination helps them grip rock and balance on small ledges where a person would struggle to stand.
