geography

A river delivers the building material

The Mississippi River carries sand and mud to Louisiana’s coast, where they build new land. Waves can wear that land away, and river-control projects can cut off some of the supply that wetlands need.

A tree older than a thousand years

Cat Island National Wildlife Refuge near St. Francisville, Louisiana, protects a bald cypress estimated to be around 1,500 years old. Its enormous trunk stands in a forest that floods naturally.
